- Excuse me for barging in like this, but I need some advice... (please :).
-
- First of all, after having literally spent the best part of two hours trying
- to fit my accelerator card back into the expansion slot, I'd like to chastise
- strongly whoever designed the A1200 expansion slot! :(
- It's such a tight fit it's unreal...
-
-
- To cut a long story short, there is something wrong with my A1200, and I would
- appreciate some advice in sorting it out.
-
- My Amiga has been in pretty intensive use recently, sometimes over 14 hours a
- day (really: essay deadlines, etc), and presumably as a result of this,
- started to go wrong...
-
- I installed a Blizzard 1230-IV card with 4Mb RAM in December and it has seemed
- to function fine. However, in the past week, my Amiga started to crash with
- worrying regularity for no apparent reason (real(!) crashes, it would just
- suddenly stop, send the screen one of several warning shades (I've had blue,
- yellow, green, magenta, you name it...), and then reboot. No guru messages or
- anything. As this was starting to happen at intervals of anything from 30s
- (while booting!) to 5 minutes or even longer, it was _rather_ annoying...
-
- Trying to sort the problem, I considered the following:
-
- virus infection:
-
- unlikely(?), I only get files from magazine coverdisks or Aminet (via PC
- disks) and use DS0: on my floppies. However, the version of Virus Checker I
- have (8.4) does seem a bit suspect: it simply eats memory and does not return
- it when doing a hard disk scan; a trojan horse perhaps?
-
-
- accelerator problems:
-
- I disabled and removed the accelerator and the problem remained in both cases.
- (I then had extreme problems in refitting it: eventually my friend and I had
- to open the case (well out of warranty!) in order to get enough leverage to
- refit the card. The only possible problem I can think of with the accelerator
- is that there is a nasty looking blob about 3mm across of something black
- stuck over a couple of tracks near the edge on the base about halfway along
- under the SIMM module (it looks as if one of the little support legs was
- squashed in manufacture?) but was present when I received the card.
-
-
- power supply:
-
- this seems most likely: we tried my friend's power supply and the computer
- worked fine (admittedly we only kept it on for about 15 minutes, sometimes it
- has taken half an hour or more before a crash). I suspect that a new more
- powerful power supply is probably necessary?? I have an internal hard disk in
- addition to the accelerator and have a modem and printer hooked up (not that
- these should draw any power, though?).
-
- Does anybody have any recommendations of a suitable power supply which I can
- purchase easily in the UK (if this is necessary)?
- The PSU I have at present is a _small_ Commodore one (smaller than the A500
- PSU), part no: 391029-02. It has a small sticker that says PSU A600 on it(!).
-
- If this is not the problem, does anybody know what is wrong? I am reluctant to
- send back the accelerator card at this exact moment, as I _need_ my Amiga to
- finish some essays rather urgently.
-
-
- One other thing:
-
- In opening the case, the power-on LED has somehow ceased to function. :(
- I've noticed that if I squeeze the case above it it comes back on again while
- doing so, so it's obviously not seriously damaged. Does anybody know what's
- happened to it and how I can fix it so that it works again?
- (The other two drive LEDs work fine)
-
- I rather miss its little smiling green face as I boot up... :(
-
-
-
- If anybody can help me, I'd be extremely grateful.
-
- ****
- Could you please reply by email as unfortunately my modem is too slow to be
- able to download this newsgroup without bankrupting myself and boosting the
- telco's profits...
- ****
-
-
- Many thanks,
-
- Dave.
-
-
- ps: Miraculously, my Amiga has _not_ crashed while typing this letter!
- I've never had to use RecoverCEDFiles so many times in my entire life until
- recently (and a very good job it does too! :)
